Your wedding day is filled with beautiful moments that you’ll want to remember forever. One of the most timeless ways to preserve those memories is through photographing your precious details with gorgeous flat lay photography. As your photographer, it is my goal to capture your wedding details — from your rings to your shoes — in a beautiful, artistic arrangement. To ensure that I capture every detail perfectly, it is key to prepare a wedding detail box. Pro tip: prep your box a few days ahead of your wedding so that this can be ready for your photographer (me) upon arrival.

In this post, we’re sharing everything you need to know about preparing a wedding detail box for your wedding day. We’ve come up with these tips in a way of a checklist to help you prep for your big day.

Let’s make those flat lay photos are as stunning as your love story!

1. Wedding Rings

Your wedding rings are one of the most important and symbolic details of your big day. Make sure to include both your engagement ring and wedding band in your detail box. These will be featured in many flat lays, so consider adding a ring box that complements your wedding theme. If possible, have your ring cleaned before your wedding so it shines in those perfect close-up shots.

2. Bridal Shoes

Your wedding shoes deserve their own moment in the spotlight! Whether they’re Gucci heels, simple ballet flats, or something unique, your shoes are often photographed in flat lay setups alongside other accessories. Be sure to include them in your detail box, especially if they’re a significant part of your bridal look.

3. Invitation Suite

Your wedding invitation suite tells a beautiful story about your wedding day and sets the tone for the entire event. Include your invitation, RSVP cards, envelopes, and save-the-dates in your detail box. These elements allow your photographer to capture the full design, colors, and vibe of your wedding, which will help convey your overall aesthetic in the photos.

4. Jewelry & Accessories

Jewelry is another key element that makes flat lay photos pop. Include your earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and hair accessories like a veil or hairpins. These details add a layer of elegance and texture to the overall composition of the flat lay, highlighting the finer aspects of your bridal look.

5. Perfume

Your wedding perfume is a special and personal touch of your bridal preparation. Including the perfume bottle in your detail box not only adds a special touch to your flat lay photos but also ties back to the scent you’ll be wearing on your big day. Plus, it makes for a sentimental memento in your wedding album.

6. Something Blue (or Personal Mementos)

Many brides love to incorporate their “something blue” into their flat lay, whether it’s a blue ribbon, a family heirloom, or a sentimental keepsake. These little personal details make your flat lay photos even more special and meaningful, showing off the emotional side of your wedding day.

7. Flower Petals or Greenery

Fresh flowers can add color and vibrance to your flat lay photos. Whether you bring along a few of your wedding bouquet flowers or petals from a floral arrangement, they’ll help create depth and texture in the images. If you’re into greenery, leaves or sprigs of eucalyptus can be a beautiful touch as well.

8. The Wedding Gown Detail

While the full gown will obviously be photographed later, I recommend including a swatch of fabric or the gown’s details (such as lace, buttons, or beading) in your detail box. Another option would be to have your veil ready to be photographed. Adding texture to the shot, these small elements can be incorporated into the flat lay to highlight the uniqueness of your dress in a more intimate way.

9. Stationery & Paper Goods

If your wedding includes other unique stationery pieces like place cards, menu cards, or thank-you notes, don’t forget to include them in your detail box. These items help tell the story of your wedding day from start to finish and add beautiful layers to your flat lay photos.

10. Small Decorative Items

Including small decorative touches can help tie your flat lay together. Think custom wax seals, vintage stamps, or engagement announcement cards. These elements can create a cohesive and personalized look that makes the photos even more beautiful.

Why It’s Important to Give Your Photographer a Detail Box

You might be wondering why it’s essential to have a detail box in the first place. Here’s the thing: Flat lay photography is about capturing the finer details that will evoke emotion for years to come. By preparing a wedding detail box with all your carefully selected items, you’re helping your photographer set the stage for breathtaking shots.

As your photographer, I take great pride in turning these small but meaningful objects into beautiful works of art. Whether it’s a close-up shot of your engagement ring, a sweeping photograph of your invitation suite, or a perfectly arranged flat lay of your accessories, I’ll ensure these details tell your unique story.
