How to Prepare for Your Family Photoshoot: A Complete Guide
February 17, 2025
Planning a family photoshoot in Central Florida and wondering how to prepare for the big day? As a family photographer based in Cocoa Beach, Florida, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless family moments against the beautiful backdrop of our sunny beaches and lush Florida landscapes. Whether you’re preparing for your first family photoshoot or your fifth, I’m here to guide you through the process to ensure everything goes smoothly and you end up with stunning memories that last a lifetime. These are the photos you’ll print and frame all throughout your home and pass down to your family in generations to come.
1. Choose the Right Location for Your Family Photoshoot in Cocoa Beach
The first step in preparing for a family photoshoot is deciding on the location. As a photographer in Cocoa Beach, I can’t recommend the local beaches enough! Whether you’re looking for a sunrise session on the soft sand or a sunset shoot with colorful skies, Cocoa Beach offers a variety of scenic backdrops perfect for any family. If the beach isn’t your style, Central Florida also boasts beautiful parks and gardens that can add a more rustic or natural feel to your photos.
I want to take an intentional and collaborative approach to these photos- from the location, to what you wear, any themes, and beyond. The more vision and ideas you can give me, the better. If you have a go-to location that you love to do together, I’d love to hear all about it!
Tip: When selecting a location, think about your family’s personality. Do you want an adventurous beach shoot, or would you prefer the charm of a garden or nature preserve?
2. Pick the Perfect Outfits for Your Family
One of the most common questions families ask is what to wear for their photoshoot. While there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, there are some general guidelines that can help you look your best all while feeling your best. When booking your session with me, I send you my FREE Photo Session Guide full of even more tips and details on how to prep for you family session.
- Coordinating: Choose outfits that complement each other, but maybe avoid being overly matchy. Coordinating colors, like soft blues, pastels, or earth tones, work beautifully for outdoor shoots in Central Florida. Think about colors that reflect the natural beauty around you—whether it’s the turquoise ocean or the lush greenery.
- Comfort is Key: Make sure everyone is comfortable in their outfits. If your kids can’t stand the thought of wearing something too formal, opt for something casual yet stylish. Natural expressions are the best in photos, and comfort plays a huge part in that.
- Consider the Weather: Central Florida can be hot and humid, especially in the summer, so opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. If you’re planning a beach shoot, lightweight clothes and flip-flops or barefoot are perfect for the occasion.

4. Bring Props or Personal Touches
Adding a personal touch to your family photoshoot can make your photos even more meaningful. If you have a favorite family activity or hobby, consider bringing props along. For example, you might bring a picnic blanket, a favorite book, or something that represents your family, like a beloved pet. At the beach, you can also use fun props like beach balls, hats, or sunglasses for playful shots.
5. Prepare the Kids (and Pets!) for the Session
If you’re bringing kids or pets along, it’s important to manage expectations. Family photoshoots are fun, but they can also be a bit tiring for little ones or pets. To help everyone stay happy during the session:
- Plan for Breaks: Bring snacks, drinks, and any comfort items (like toys or blankets) to keep the kids or pets relaxed.
- If you’re bringing pets, be sure to have a helper (like a friend or family member) to watch them between shots to ensure they’re not too distracted or restless.
6. And Most important, have fun and relax!
The most important tip for preparing for your family photoshoot is to have fun! The more relaxed and natural everyone feels, the better your photos will turn out. A photoshoot is a chance to capture memories, not just “perfect” pictures. Embrace your family’s personalities and quirks—those moments will be the ones you cherish the most
